The Universal Account Number (UAN) or UAN number is essential for managing your EPF (Employee Provident Fund) account online. Activating your UAN unlocks a range of convenient services, including balance checks, withdrawals, and transfer requests, making it an indispensable tool for EPF members. In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step to activate your UAN number, so you can make the most of the EPFO’s online facilities.
Step 1: Gather Required Information
Before you begin, make sure you have the following information ready:
- Your UAN number (usually provided by your employer or see in your payment slip)
- Aadhaar number and PAN
- Registered mobile number linked to your UAN
Having these details on hand will make the activation process quicker and easier.
Step 2: Visit the UAN Member Portal
To activate your UAN, visit the official EPFO UAN Member Portal. Click to visit
On the homepage, look for the “Activate UAN” link in the login area and click it. This will direct you to the UAN activation page.

Step 3: Enter Your UAN and Other Required Details
On the UAN activation page, you’ll need to fill in specific details:
- UAN Number: Enter your 12-digit UAN.
- Member ID: If you don’t have your Member ID, you can use your Aadhaar or PAN number as an alternative.
- Aadhaar or PAN: Enter either your Aadhaar or PAN if you don’t have your Member ID handy.
- Mobile Number: Enter the mobile number linked with your UAN (you’ll receive an OTP on this number for verification).
After entering these details, complete the Captcha code and click “Get Authorization Pin.”

Step 4: Verify with OTP (One-Time Password)
Once you click “Get Authorization Pin,” you’ll receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter this OTP in the specified field on the portal page to verify your identity.
After verification you will get a default password by containing Small and capital alphabets, digits, symbols as shown in image below.

Step 5: Set Up Your Password
Now Login with your recieved default password and UAN. This will ask for OTP again, after OTP verification, There will a message of “Your Password Is System Generated.Kindly Update It “. You’ll be prompted to create a password for your UAN Member Portal account. Make sure to choose a secure password that’s easy to remember but difficult for others to guess. Password requirements might include a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Step 6: Log in to Your UAN Account
Once the password is set, you can log in to the UAN Member Portal using your UAN number as the username and your new password. This access allows you to view your EPF balance, download passbooks, update KYC information, and make EPF withdrawal or transfer requests.
Step 7: Update KYC Information (Optional but Recommended)
After logging in for the first time, it’s a good idea to verify and update your KYC (Know Your Customer) information. Adding Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details will simplify future transactions and help avoid delays in withdrawal or transfer processes.
- Go to “Manage” and select “KYC.”
- Add your Aadhaar number, PAN, and bank details as needed.
- Once updated, the information will be verified by EPFO, which could take a few days.
